Wesley Huang is an industrial designer who graduated from OCAD University in 2022 as an international student from China. He is mainly focuses on user experience by addressing their emotion and interaction, while he fascinated by strategic foresight and futuristic thinking. In design, Wesley believes that everything in design is user-centered. From the beginning to the end; from environment protection is focusing on the long-term future of the user, to the shape and interaction that aim to provide the best moment to the user. He believes that any design and products which no longer put the user as the priority will eventually start to disappoint everyone. Also, Wesley believes that listening to the story of the users, is as important as analyzing their needs and wants.

Who is Wesley Huang?

Wesley Huang came to Toronto, Canada for his education in 2012. His high school was Francis Libermann Catholic High School, When he first began the life in Canada, the language barrier was a huge challenge, but the Art course, Drama course, and Woodworking course were triggering his creative and making spirit. Then his experience in the robotic competition club during the life in high school became the final push for him. He decided to head toward university for industrial design, He was totally interested in the creative, like how we feel when experiencing something new and amazing.

What happened later on?

In the beginning, everything looks bright and dreams, and he was accepted by OCAD University. However, life was never easy, he had to give it up to go back to China to his family.

But he didn’t stop. One year later, he came back to Toronto, with his offer, which was accepted by OCAD University again. Unfortunately, as time passed, he had to go to college for Product Design first, while moving on to his language education.

This turned out not a bad thing. Wesley became more prepared and better understand what he wants to study and why. He was accepted by OCAD University for the third time for the Industrial Design program. This time, he was in.

How does he become an industrial designer?

To Wesley, design is more than a creative profession. It is a process that the people, what we called “designer”, embrace the nature, free the will, and dive into the story, with the vision of flashing links between different dots that many people never thought can be connected. We immerse into the infinite possibilities to locate the one that bridged people to what they dreamed of, and what they even never seen before. Wesley believes designer is not designing a service, a product, or a business, but a better future for people, by taking care of their needs, their wants, and their desire, while making sure everything is on the right path.

Why does he want to become a designer?

While Wesley has the advantage of his multicultural background, it does come back to him. Despite the obvious one, language, he continued to witness and face the differences between the Eastern and Western. These led him to the conflict between the values, recognition, behaviours, reaction of people and many other aspects.

Is there any challenge or difficulties?

What does Wesley do outside of the profession and how does he maintains the work-life balanced?

Travel, movies, TV shows and dramas, water sport, music, science fiction, philosophy, and biology are all the hobbies and areas that he is interested in. Meanwhile, Wesley also enjoys the time of volunteering, and his time as part of the Emergency Respond Team at the Canadian Red Cross.

Most people look at image information first, but no matter how careful, and how hard we tried to maintain a neutral position for opinion, the first impression still affects us. In design, how Wesley looks is not important. Of course, it can be guaranteed that he is a completely natural normal human being.
